Russell Wilson eyes major career change months after landing CBS gig on NFL retirement
Russell Wilson could reportedly be planning his next stop in his career

Russell Wilson has spent recent months adjusting to life in a television studio, but he's now reportedly eyeing a vastly different role on Saturdays.

The Super Bowl champion quarterback interviewed Tuesday for the head coaching opening at NC State, sources confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Wilson, 38, announced his retirement from the NFL in June to become an analyst for CBS Sports on The NFL Today, appearing alongside James Brown, Nate Burleson and Bill Cowher.

He possesses no previous coaching experience at any level. Elsewhere in the sports media world, Dianna Russini is reportedly hinting at her return "next week" after the Mike Vrabel scandal.

The Wolfpack dismissed veteran coach Dave Doeren on Oct. 24, one day following a 31-28 defeat to Stanford that left the squad at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC competition.

Doeren departed as the program's all-time wins leader with a 98-74 mark spanning more than a decade, though NC State failed to challenge for ACC titles during his tenure. Interim coach Todd Goebbel guided the Wolfpack to victory over California on Saturday.

Wilson's candidacy introduces a second prominent quarterback connected to the institution.

Philip Rivers, who excelled at NC State from 2000 to 2003, has been considered the frontrunner since the position became available, with ESPN reporting he's engaged in substantial conversations with the university.

Rivers, 44, is currently in his sixth year as head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, and lacks collegiate coaching credentials.

He has informed NC State of his desire to complete the high school campaign first, while his son Gunner, a four-star quarterback at St. Michael, has pledged to join the Wolfpack for 2027. Rivers has been cautious about addressing the rumors.

"Ton of respect and appreciation for coach Doeren and all he did for the University," Rivers told AL.com. "I understand the chatter that's out there, but we are getting ready for Foley and the playoffs."

Wilson spent three seasons at NC State before moving to Wisconsin for his senior year in 2011. He sits fourth on the school's all-time list with 8,545 passing yards and recorded 76 touchdown passes in Raleigh, falling just one short of Rivers' program record of 95.

Seattle selected him in the third round of the 2012 draft, and he subsequently earned 10 Pro Bowl selections across a 14-season career, guiding the Seahawks to their maiden Super Bowl championship following the 2013 season.

His concluding NFL stint was considerably less distinguished. Wilson began three games for the New York Giants last season before being replaced by Jaxson Dart, and he weighed an opportunity with the Jets before opting to transition into broadcasting for 2026.

He might have support in the hiring process, however. Cowher, his CBS broadcasting partner and a former NC State player, is serving as an adviser to the program during its coaching search.
