Defending champions Vipers head into Thursday evening’s fixture against Lugazi knowing that any more slip-ups could severely derail their season.
Following a string of disappointing setbacks, including recent defeats to Mbarara City and URA FC, the Venoms are desperate for a resounding victory to get their campaign back on track.
The champions currently find themselves in an unfamiliar 10th place on the league table with just 11 points. A staggering run of form has seen them secure only one victory in their last five league outings, leaving coach John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda under intense pressure to impress the club’s hierarchy.
Luyinda, who took the reins following Denis Lavagne’s departure, remains candid about the squad’s current struggles but is optimistic about a turnaround.
“We are having a difficult period at the time but we must stick together and fight for the badge,” Luyinda told Kawowo Sports. “For now, what is hurting is failure to take away the opportunities we create, but I am optimistic that if we win one game, we can go on a run.”
To spark that run, Vipers’ forward line—led by Gusto Mulongo—will need to discover their clinical edge against a resilient Lugazi side.
However, Lugazi arrive with motivations of their own. Currently sitting 13th in the standings with 8 points, the visitors are winless in their last five matches and are desperate for a positive result to avoid slumping further into the relegation zone.
History heavily favors the hosts. In their last four league meetings, Vipers hold the upper hand with three wins and one draw.
Former Vipers players Emmanuel Munoobi, Cromwell Rwothomio and Livingstone Mulondo will turn guns against former bosses.
In other matches on Thursday, Express host Blacks Power while Ntugasaze host Entebbe UPPC in Kamwokya.
