Dinamo Zagreb faces Dutch club NEC Nijmegen in the third round of the Europa League, bringing fans face-to-face with an unfamiliar opponent whose unusual acronym conceals more than a century of history, gol.dnevnik.hr reported.
The club’s name is an abbreviation for Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie, which translates from Dutch as the “Nijmegen Concord Association.” This identity emerged in April 1910 through the merger of two local sides, Eendracht and NVV Nijmegen. Historical records show the organization traces its roots back to November 15, 1900, when founders Guus Lodestijn, Anton Kuijpers, and Wouter van Lent established Eendracht in an impoverished neighborhood of Nijmegen. At a time when Dutch football was largely the domain of wealthier social strata, these youths funded their club with a weekly two-cent membership fee used to purchase match balls. The name Eendracht reflects the founders’ guiding motto, “Eendracht maakt macht”—meaning “Unity makes strength.”
Outside the Netherlands, the team is frequently referred to as NEC Nijmegen, although adding the city’s name is technically redundant because the initial letter N already stands for Nijmegen. International media adopted this naming convention to clarify the club’s geographic origin for global audiences. Within the Netherlands, however, the acronym NEC or N.E.C. is used exclusively as registered in official records. The squad wears distinct red, green, and black colors and has played its home fixtures at the stadium De Goffert since 1939. While the club has never captured a Dutch league title, it remains a traditional fixture in Dutch football with multiple appearances in European competitions.
