Wayne Rooney has urged Michael Carrick to consider dropping Amad Diallo and giving Shea Lacey a starting opportunity following Manchester United’s comeback victory against Roma.
United recovered from two goals down to secure a dramatic 3-2 win, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a penalty before Matheus Cunha completed the turnaround with two goals.
Lacey entered the contest during the final 15 minutes and immediately influenced proceedings, providing the assist for Cunha’s winning strike with an impressive touch and pass.
Rooney believes the teenager offers something different in attack, particularly when compared with Amad’s contribution in the Champions League encounter.
Speaking on Amazon Prime, Rooney praised Lacey’s involvement, highlighting the quality of his decision-making and execution.
“That’s a great touch inside and a wonderful pass, and the finish is incredible.
“If you look at it again, you probably think, can he square it and play your teammate in? But for me, it’s all about that first touch [from Lacey], takes the defender out and that pass is incredible.
“We’ve said about Amad, Amad does some really good things, but it’s that end product, that is what takes you to the next level.”
Rooney added that Lacey’s promising appearances suggest he deserves greater responsibility within Carrick’s team.
Carrick also praised the youngster’s contribution, describing him as talented, determined and capable of bringing energy to the side, according to Football 365.
The United manager particularly appreciated Lacey’s defensive commitment, insisting that his performance demonstrated the qualities required of a complete footballer.
