MINNEAPOLIS — The Winona Senior High boys soccer team will officially be playing for a state title.
Behind a pair of second half goals, the No. 5-seeded Winhawks stunned top-seeded and defending state champion Blake on Wednesday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
In the program's first state trip, Winona (17-2-1) will now play for a Class 2A title at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Winhawks broke a scoreless tie with 34 minutes, 57 seconds left when the Winhawks wasted little time in turning an errant Blake pass into a counterstrike opportunity. Sergio Carrion Lopez then eventually put a pass to the sprinting Leif Overhaug, who then took three dribbles and buried the shot into the left side of the goal from just outside of the 6-yard box.
Winona found its insurance goal just 12 minutes later when Overhaug found Jose Carrion Lopez. Overhaug received a great pass into the box before slotting his own pass across the front of the net to the waiting Carrion Lopez. The junior midfielder then tapped it in to make it 2-0 with 22:45 left.
As expected, Blake refused to go down quietly.
The Bears (16-4-1) made it interesting when Marcello De Leon Garcia buried a shot with 11:11 left to cut the deficit in half.
It then looked like Blake had found its equalizer with 8:48 left.
Winona keeper Robert MacLennan appeared to save a rocket of a shot from inside the box with his face, but the rebound went right to Blake, which fired a shot into the net. But the officials quickly blew the play dead due to a forceful blow to the head after MacLennan went down.
That was the last great chance for Blake.
Now, the Winhawks will look to etch their name in history on Saturday.
