THE boxing world is mourning the loss of Carlos Gerena Allende, who has sadly died aged 55.
Gerena was tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver in his native Puerto Rico late last month.
“El Topo” was knocked down by a car on October 26 while crossing a PR-2 highway in Bayamon.
A second vehicle sadly didn’t see the former Olympian lying on the motorway and ran over him.
Boxing fans around the world took to social media to mourn the late Gerena.
One wrote: “God bless, champ.”
Another said: “My Sincere Condolences and Respect With Honor 🙏.
“May He Rest In Eternal Peace 🙏.”
And another said: “R.I.P. champ.”
One remarked: “Peace to his remains, and solidarity with his family — from Costa Rica.”
Another chimed in: “A great human being and friend 🙌🏻, rest in peace 🙏.”
The World Boxing Organisation also paid their respects.
They wrote: “The WBO mourns the passing of Carlos “El Topo” Gerena, a respected figure in Puerto Rican boxing whose passion and dedication left a lasting impact on the sport.
“Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Puerto Rican boxing community. Rest in peace, Topo. .”
The late Genera represented Puerto Rico at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
He was dumped out of the featherweight tournament in the second round by Algeria’s Hocine Soltani.
Genera turned professional the following year and would twice challenge for the WBC’s Super Featherweight crown.
But he’d come up short on both occasions, losing to Genaro Hernandez and boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr – the latter of whom stopped him in the eighth round of their Sin City showdown.
