EPL: Iwobi, Bassey Feature As Fulham Hold Aston Villa

Super Eagles duo Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were both in action as Fulham battled back to secure a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park in Saturday’s Premier League clash.

The match marked the ninth league appearance of the 2026/27 campaign for both Nigerian stars, with Iwobi putting in an impressive shift in midfield before being substituted for Cairrney in the 75th minute, while Bassey anchored the visitors’ defense throughout.

Unai Emery’s side dominated long stretches of the first half and thought they had seized the early initiative when captain John McGinn stepped up for a 15th-minute penalty following a VAR handball review, only for his spot-kick to crash agonizingly off the woodwork.

Villa eventually made their sustained pressure count shortly before the break, as Johan Manzambi set up Nicolas Jackson to sweep home a composed right-footed finish and give the hosts a deserved 1–0 lead heading into halftime.

However, Fulham showed great resilience after the restart and dragged themselves back into the contest midway through the second half when an unfortunate mix-up resulted in Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki turning the ball into his own net in the 64th minute.

Seeking a late winner, Emery turned to his bench with a triple substitution in the 66th minute, introducing Emiliano Buendía, João Gomes, and Ibrahim Mbaye.

Despite late surges from the hosts and a tense five minutes of stoppage time, Fulham’s defense, marshaled by Bassey, stood firm to preserve the draw and secure a valuable point on the road.
