Simeone equals Luis Aragonés’s LaLiga wins record as Atlético Madrid beat Levante 2-0
Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone score as Atlético Madrid win at Levante

Atlético Madrid won 2-0 at Levante on Saturday, making it a milestone afternoon for Diego Simeone. Barcelona are next up in the league, and one more victory would give him the coaching record on his own.

Atlético Madrid’s trip to Valencia ended with a milestone for their coach. It took the Argentine 565 LaLiga matches in charge to reach the mark, according to Club Atlético de Madrid.

The visitors went in at the interval a goal up. Álex Baena supplied the pass for their second. Earlier, Morten Hjulmand had a goal ruled out by VAR in the 17th minute. Levante coach Luís Castro was shown a yellow card for dissent a minute later.

Levante made the chances but Oblak kept them out

The scoreline did not reflect the balance of chances. Levante shot 14 times from inside the box, while Atlético managed 3. The hosts’ expected goals reached 1.33, against 0.63 for the visitors.

Jan Oblak was the difference. Around the tenth minute, he made a crucial one-handed save to deny Dani Requena, Infobae (EFE) reported. The goalkeeper finished with a rating of 8.08.

Atlético had more of the ball, with 54% possession and 560 passes to Levante’s 450. Simeone made two double changes. Jonathan David and Sørloth replaced Lee Kang-In and Julián Álvarez in the 67th minute. Le Normand and Lookman came on for Barrios and Baena in the 76th.

The result was Atlético’s seventh league win in a row. It briefly took them top of the table. The teams’ last meeting, on 31 January 2026, had ended 0-0 in Valencia.

Barcelona’s visit could give Simeone the record outright

Simeone already leads Aragonés on wider measures at the club. Across all official competitions with Atlético, he has 479 wins from 813 games. Aragonés managed 308 wins from 612 games there. The club credits Simeone with eight trophies as coach, two more than Aragonés’s six.

The coming weeks carry real weight. From 11 games, Atlético have nine wins, one draw and one defeat. Real Madrid sit third on 24 points from 10 games.

Levante are 17th on 10 points after their second straight defeat. They travel to Tarancón in the Copa del Rey on Thursday 5 November. Their next league game is away to Celta de Vigo at 18:30 on Sunday 8 November.

Atlético host Bayern München in the Champions League on Tuesday 3 November. Their meeting with Barcelona is the last match of matchday 12, kicking off at 21:00 on Sunday 8 November. The Riyadh Air Metropolitano will stage the game.
