Tottenham finally ended their eight-year wait for a Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge, securing a memorable 2-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday. Here are four Spurs players who came out of the London derby with plenty of credit, and one who was desperately unlucky.

Mateus Fernandes shows why he deserves to start for Tottenham

We backed Mateus Fernandes in our preview to be the difference-maker against Chelsea, and, well, we were spot on. It was only the Portuguese midfielder’s third Premier League start of the season, but for the first time, he was deployed in his preferred number eight role.

His previous two starts had come in the number 10 position, where De Zerbi was effectively trying to fit an obnoxiously large square peg into a round hole. Against Chelsea, we finally got to see Fernandes in an environment where he could thrive, and he did.

What an incredible performance on a night like this. It was his corner that forced Tottenham’s opener, and he seemed to be everywhere on the pitch, contributing both on and off the ball.

His numbers tell the story of just how influential he was, outperforming every other player on the pitch in several key areas (Squawka):

That is quite the all-round performance.

Mathys Tel silences his Spurs critics

Mathys Tel had not started a Premier League game for Tottenham since the goalless draw against Nottingham Forest on 5 September. He had started all of Spurs’ earlier fixtures, but his performances had been underwhelming enough for De Zerbi to criticise him publicly.

The French youngster was finally given another opportunity against Chelsea, and he repaid that faith in spectacular fashion.

Tel had a relatively slow start, failing to make the most of a few promising situations on the left. However, he made up for it in the second half, racing forward from inside his own half, cutting inside two challenges and firing a brilliant low shot just inside the left-hand post.

It was exactly the sort of moment Tottenham needed, and a reminder of the explosive attacking ability he can bring to the side when things click. More of that, please!

Sandro Tonali delivers another man-of-the-match-worthy performance

Sandro Tonali endured a slow start to the season, but his performances have improved with every passing game. He was arguably Tottenham’s best player against Manchester United, followed that up against Coventry, and produced another outstanding display against Chelsea.

The Italian barely put a foot wrong, combining brilliantly with James Maddison and Fernandes in midfield while consistently finding himself in the right position to help his teammates.

His work off the ball was just as impressive. Tonali seemed to have an answer for everything Chelsea tried, helping Spurs maintain control in the middle of the park during a crucial away fixture.

He also tried his luck with a few thunderous efforts from dangerous areas when the ball was loose. Unfortunately, none found the back of the net. But we are calling it now: one of these days, one is going in, and it is going to be an absolute screamer.

Antonin Kinsky turns his biggest weakness into a strength

For much of the season, Antonin Kinsky’s biggest strengths have been his long-range distribution and his composure when playing short passes under pressure.

His shot-stopping, meanwhile, has been a major concern, with several performances this season raising questions about whether he can establish himself as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Against Chelsea, those strengths and weaknesses appeared to swap places.

Kinsky was unusually poor with his distribution, giving the ball away on several occasions despite not being under significant pressure. It was not the sort of performance we have come to expect from him with the ball at his feet.

But when it came to stopping shots, the Czech goalkeeper more than made up for his mistakes. He produced a series of brilliant saves (4) to keep Chelsea out and ensure Tottenham left Stamford Bridge with all three points.

The result was his third clean sheet of the season, and a timely reminder that there is more to being a goalkeeper than playing out from the back.

James Maddison suffers another frustrating setback

On a night when Tottenham had so much to celebrate, it feels harsh to pick a loser based on anything other than bad luck. James Maddison was desperately unfortunate to see his evening cut short by another injury concern.

The midfielder made only his second start for the club in 541 days, having spent so long working his way back from injury. He had looked bright during his time on the pitch, helping Tottenham control the midfield before being forced off just five minutes into the second half.

Thankfully, the injury was not to the knee that kept him out with an ACL problem last year. Instead, it appeared to be a groin issue, although further medical checks are needed to establish the full extent of the problem.

More updates on Maddison’s condition are expected after those checks. Hopefully, it turns out to be nothing serious, because after such a long wait to see him back in the starting XI, the last thing Tottenham need is another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
