According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Barcelona have opened talks over a new contract for young midfielder Brian Farinas, despite the 20-year-old not yet making a competitive first-team appearance under head coach Hansi Flick this season.
The Spanish club are reportedly exploring the possibility of extending Farinas’ current agreement by a further one or two years. Such an arrangement could keep him at Camp Nou until 2029 or 2030.
Barcelona are also considering offering the midfielder improved financial terms and raising his release clause as they look to protect his future and maintain control over his development.
Farinas’ existing contract runs until the summer of 2028, giving the club a reason to begin discussions early rather than wait until he approaches the final stages of his deal.
The youngster was promoted to the senior squad this season after impressing during pre-season. His adaptability, work rate and performances reportedly attracted Flick’s attention, particularly when Frenkie de Jong was sidelined with an injury.
Farinas joined Barcelona’s academy in 2018 after leaving Villarreal and gradually progressed through the club’s youth ranks. His development eventually earned him a place in the first-team setup, where he was assigned the No. 4 shirt.
Despite that progress, however, he has yet to make a competitive appearance for the senior side this season. The number of established midfielders competing for places has made it difficult for him to secure regular opportunities.
His lack of minutes could therefore become a significant consideration in the coming months. The report suggests Barcelona may need to review his situation in January if he continues to struggle for playing time.
That possibility does not automatically point towards an exit, but the midfielder may need more regular football to continue progressing at this stage of his career.
From Barcelona’s perspective, a contract extension would help safeguard a young player they believe has considerable potential. Increasing his release clause would also give the club greater protection if rival teams show interest in securing his services.
However, agreeing on fresh terms may not resolve every concern. Barcelona will also need to offer Farinas a credible opportunity to break into the first team if they want him to remain an important part of their long-term plans.
