According to a report published by The Athletic on Thursday, October 22, 2026, transfer journalist Nicolo Schira indicated that the Ecuadorian youngster is "ready to leave Chelsea". However, it remains uncertain whether the 18-year-old midfielder would prefer another loan spell elsewhere or seek a permanent transfer away from the Premier League club.
Paez arrived at Chelsea last summer after turning 18, having agreed to join the London side two years earlier from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle. His transfer generated considerable excitement, with expectations that he would eventually develop into an important member of Chelsea's first team.
Despite his promising reputation, the midfielder has struggled to make the expected progress. Loan spells at Strasbourg and River Plate have not provided the breakthrough he needed, leaving him outside Chelsea's immediate senior-team plans. He has instead been featuring for the club's Under-21 side during the current campaign.
His situation is particularly surprising because several established Chelsea players have reportedly supported his development. Captain Reece James and forward Cole Palmer are among those believed to recognise his potential and hope he can eventually contribute significantly to the team.
In January, journalist Ben Jacobs discussed the encouragement Paez had received from senior members of the squad, highlighting their interest in helping him settle into the club's long-term plans.
"I think Palmer had spoken to Kendry Paez even when he was at Strasbourg about long-term integration, and Reece James has had a conversation with him as well," Jacobs reported.
He also explained the wider support surrounding the young midfielder, adding, "So a lot of the senior Chelsea players have been quite invested in Kendry Paez because they think that he could be big for the football club one day."
Nevertheless, the midfielder's performances at youth level have raised further questions about his progress. Reports indicate that he has managed only one assist in four appearances for Chelsea's Under-21 team during the 2026/27 season.
Previous reports have also raised concerns about his professionalism, although adapting to English football and dealing with the pressure surrounding his arrival could be contributing factors.
Paez was previously considered one of Ecuador's brightest prospects and made history as the youngest goalscorer in the country's top division. A January departure could provide him with an opportunity to rebuild his confidence, gain regular playing time and continue developing his career.
