Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez has revealed that returning to River Plate remains one of his biggest ambitions, insisting that he intends to rejoin the Argentine club before retiring from professional football.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Friday, October 30, 2026, the 25-year-old is determined to make another appearance for his boyhood team, despite recently beginning a new chapter at Manchester City.
Fernandez completed a move from Chelsea to the Etihad Stadium on Deadline Day this summer in a deal reportedly worth €145 million. The transfer made him the most expensive signing in Premier League history.
Despite his commitment to City, the Argentine midfielder has never hidden his desire to return to River Plate, where he spent 15 years before leaving for Benfica in 2022.
He made 53 senior appearances for the Argentine giants before embarking on his European career. Although his current contract with Manchester City runs until 2031, Fernandez has repeatedly expressed his intention to play for River again.
Speaking on the Argentine programme Los Edul, he reaffirmed his position, saying: “I want to return to River at some point, I’ve said it several times. I’m going to return, I’m sure of it. It’s something I really want. I stand by my words and what’s on record.”
He further explained that his desire to return is driven by his ambition to win more trophies and experience life at the club for a longer period.
“If I say it, it’s because I feel it and because I know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did,” he added.
However, Fernandez made it clear that a return to Argentina is not an immediate possibility, acknowledging that he still has significant commitments at Manchester City.
“Today, I’m here with a long contract at Manchester City. There’s still a long way to go, but it will happen,” he stated.
Fernandez is among three significant midfield signings made by City during the summer transfer window, alongside Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Since arriving on September 1, the midfielder has registered one goal in 10 appearances for the Premier League champions.
Although his comments have confirmed his long-term intentions, an exit from Manchester City next year is considered unlikely, with the club expected to continue relying on him in the coming seasons.
