According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Tottenham Hotspur recorded a valuable 2-0 win against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, taking full advantage of their numerical advantage after Jean-Philippe Mateta received a first-half red card.
Crystal Palace began the match positively and looked determined to trouble the home side. In the ninth minute, Daichi Kamada came close to giving the visitors the lead with an effort that forced Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky into an important save.
However, Palace's hopes suffered a major blow when Mateta was dismissed following a VAR intervention. The forward was initially shown a yellow card for a sliding tackle, but after reviewing the incident, referee Michael Oliver changed his decision and issued a straight red card.
The dismissal left Crystal Palace with 10 men, giving Tottenham an opportunity to take control of the contest. Spurs increased their attacking pressure and found the breakthrough in the 25th minute through Archie Gray.
Mohammed Kudus took responsibility for delivering a corner kick into the Palace penalty area, and Gray made excellent contact with the ball, directing a powerful header beyond Dean Henderson to put Tottenham ahead.
Although the hosts enjoyed a numerical advantage and went into the break with the lead, they could not find another goal before half-time. Crystal Palace defended with determination, while Henderson made several important interventions to prevent Tottenham from extending their advantage.
After the restart, Tottenham continued to dominate possession and pushed forward in search of a second goal. Mathys Tel, Dominic Solanke and other attacking players attempted to increase the pressure on Palace's defence.
Henderson remained busy between the posts and produced some impressive saves to keep his side in the contest. Crystal Palace also survived another dangerous situation when a clearance on the goal line prevented Tel from scoring from close range.
Tottenham refused to reduce their attacking intensity as they continued creating opportunities. Robertson also tested Henderson, but the Palace goalkeeper was once again equal to the challenge.
The home side eventually found their second goal in the 73rd minute when van Hecke headed the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net, making the situation even more difficult for the visitors.
With a two-goal advantage, Tottenham became more comfortable and maintained control of the match. Crystal Palace struggled to respond offensively because of their numerical disadvantage and found it difficult to threaten the home side consistently.
Kudus later thought he had an opportunity to add another goal, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Henderson also denied Kulusevski with another excellent save, while Pedro Porro came close but failed to find the target.
Despite their attempts to prevent Tottenham from increasing the scoreline, Crystal Palace could not find a way back into the game before the final whistle.
The victory gave Tottenham three important points in their Premier League campaign and strengthened their position following the latest round of fixtures.
Tottenham's 2-0 triumph was largely influenced by Mateta's dismissal, which changed the direction of the encounter and allowed the hosts to make their numerical advantage count.
