According to a report by London Evening Standard on Thursday October 22, 2026, Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly become Manchester United’s preferred managerial candidate as pressure intensifies on Michael Carrick following another disappointing result, leaving the club considering potential changes to leadership.
United’s situation worsened after Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como, extending their winless run to seven matches across all competitions and increasing uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s future.
The manager is also facing growing questions about his relationship with the dressing room, particularly after captain Bruno Fernandes openly criticised his tactical decisions following the heavy defeat in Italy.
Reports suggest United’s hierarchy are examining alternative appointments despite some continued internal support for Carrick, with Nagelsmann emerging as a serious contender to take charge if a dismissal happens.
According to reports from The Telegraph, the former Germany and Bayern Munich manager would consider the opportunity, while talkSPORT claims United have already made initial contact regarding the position.
Nagelsmann became available after leaving his position as Germany’s national team coach during the summer, following the country’s disappointing World Cup campaign, which ended with elimination against Paraguay.
Although Nagelsmann reportedly leads the race, several other managers remain under consideration as United assess their options and search for someone capable of restoring stability and improving results.
Antonio Conte, who previously won the Premier League with Chelsea and most recently managed Napoli, has reportedly been offered to United, although reports indicate he is not currently included on their shortlist.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is another potential option, with United understood to admire his work. However, securing his services could prove difficult because he signed a new long-term contract last season.
Eddie Howe has also attracted attention from United, with reports suggesting Sir Jim Ratcliffe admires the former Newcastle manager. However, Howe previously indicated he wanted time away from football after leaving his position.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has also been mentioned as an attractive possibility after guiding the club to Europa League success last season, although persuading him to leave Villa could prove challenging.
Como manager Cesc Fabregas was previously discussed as an unexpected candidate, but his appointment appears unlikely following his side’s commanding victory over United.
United host Bournemouth on Sunday, and the result could prove crucial in determining whether Carrick remains in charge or the club moves forward with a managerial change.
