According to a report by TEAMtalk on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly ruled out removing Bruno Fernandes as club captain after his public criticism of the team’s tactical approach following their 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
The Portuguese midfielder’s comments have sparked debate among supporters, particularly as questions grow over his relationship with manager Michael Carrick and the coaching staff. United’s continued struggles for consistent results have added further significance to the captain’s reaction.
Speaking after Wednesday’s disappointing performance, Fernandes voiced his frustration with the team’s defensive setup, arguing that United’s approach allowed Como too much space and confidence to play their game.
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence,” Fernandes said.
When asked whether Carrick and his coaching staff had made the wrong tactical decisions, the midfielder declined to make a direct judgment, instead placing responsibility on those in charge.
“That’s on the manager and staff to see, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” he added.
The remarks have intensified scrutiny of Carrick, whose future remains uncertain following United’s disappointing run of form. The club are reportedly assessing potential managerial alternatives, although Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.
Despite the controversy surrounding Fernandes’ comments, United are not believed to be planning disciplinary action against their captain or considering taking the armband away from him.
Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett reported that Fernandes would retain the captaincy and was unlikely to face punishment for speaking about the coaching staff’s decisions.
“Bruno Fernandes will not be stripped of the #mufc captaincy and is unlikely to be disciplined by the club following his criticism of the coaching staff after the defeat to Como,” Dorsett wrote on X.
The reporter added that there was disappointment within the club over the midfielder’s remarks. However, the prevailing view was reportedly that Fernandes had expressed understandable frustration with the manner of the defeat.
For now, the United captain appears set to keep his leadership role as the team prepares for the Bournemouth match, with attention remaining firmly on whether the players can deliver an improved performance.
