President Tinubu Hails Historic Flamingos After World Cup Triumph

According to a report by The Nation on Sunday, November President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has showered glowing praises on Nigeria’s U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, following their breathtaking 2-1 victory over Japan in the final to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, Morocco.

The monumental triumph makes Nigeria the very first African country to win the prestigious global title, capping off a remarkable campaign where the girls bounced back from an opening-day defeat to secure six consecutive victories.

Returning home from campaign engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, an elated President Tinubu expressed immense joy at the "wonderful news" delivered by the nation's young heroines.

In a personal congratulatory message, President Tinubu lauded the team's grit, resilience, and unyielding spirit.

"What wonderful news to return home to! Our young girls have conquered the world and given Nigerians everywhere another reason to celebrate our great country," the President stated.

"To our gallant Flamingos, I say congratulations. You have shown courage, discipline, determination, and the Nigerian spirit of never giving up. You have written your names in gold, and your country is immensely proud of you."

Recalling the team's journey, the President noted that the girls had kept the promise they made after their semi-final victory—flying the national flag proudly to the very top of the world.

He specifically singled out goalscorers Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku for their brilliant performances in the final showdown, while also extending warm commendations to the coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the National Sports Commission.

President Tinubu emphasized that the Flamingos' historic feat serves as a powerful beacon of hope for millions of young girls across the country.

"Your victory is an inspiration to millions of young Nigerian girls who dream of achieving greatness. You have shown them that with hard work, opportunity, and determination, they too can reach the highest levels of achievement."

Reaffirming his administration's dedication to sports development, the President pledged continued investment in grassroots sports and expanded platforms for young Nigerians—particularly girls—to nurture their talents and fulfill their ultimate potential.
