According to a report by FootballTransfers, on Friday October 23, 2026, Michael Carrick’s position at Manchester United is increasingly uncertain, with senior executives reportedly split over whether to replace him and who should take over.
The 4–1 Champions League defeat to Como has intensified scrutiny of Carrick. United have won only twice in their past 11 matches, while captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly questioned the team’s approach.
Carrick is still expected to lead the side against Bournemouth on Sunday, but potential successors have reportedly been discussed behind the scenes.
According to the Daily Mail, director of recruitment Christopher Vivell favours Julian Nagelsmann, while director of football Jason Wilcox would prefer a manager with Premier League experience. Names reportedly under consideration include Eddie Howe, Fabian Hürzeler, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte.
The report says some executives sympathise with Carrick, particularly amid concerns about the club’s summer recruitment. However, United’s poor results and apparent friction between players and the manager are adding to the pressure.
Fernandes described the decision not to press opponents as a coaching choice. Carrick responded after the Como match: “Whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run back, you ain’t going to win.”
Fernandes has also criticised the club’s focus on its past, adding to signs of discontent within the squad. United are reportedly reluctant to make another managerial change, but a poor result against Bournemouth could further weaken Carrick’s position.
Any appointment would present challenges. Hürzeler is under contract at Brighton, Emery may be difficult to prise away, and Howe and Conte each bring their own uncertainties. United’s directors must first agree on a candidate if they decide Carrick’s time is up.
