Manchester United Consider January Move for Manchester City Defender Rayan Ait-Nouri

According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Thursday October 22, 2026, according to reports, Manchester United are mulling over a move for a defender from Manchester City as Michael Carrick looks to turn around the club's fortunes after a dismal start to the season.

Although Carlos Tevez's controversial switch in 2009 stands out, transfers between the Manchester rivals are still rare due to their intense rivalry and history of competition.

City have spent heavily in recent seasons, proving their financial strength, while United have been reluctant to engage in costly bidding battles, despite investing heavily themselves.

City allegedly signed Elliot Anderson for £116 million in July, but United saw him as a future captain, so the disparity became clear during their pursuit of Anderson.

Despite United's clear deficiencies at left back, the club was unable to acquire a replacement before the summer transfer window ended, continuing their ongoing recruitment woes.

Carrick has had to look into other possibilities, such as Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot, and Ayden Heaven, due to the issues caused by Luke Shaw's fitness concerns and Patrick Dorgu's injury problems.

United collected seven points from seven Premier League matches before their 4-1 Champions League loss to Como on Wednesday, a result of their struggles and an unimpressive campaign overall.

In an effort to fortify their left flank, United are reportedly investigating the possibility of loaning Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri in January.

United were interested in signing the Algeria international in September, but talks allegedly broke down when City insisted on a permanent deal rather than agreeing to City's temporary proposal.

Although he made the move to City from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2025, Ait-Nouri has yet to make an impact. This season, he has three assists in all competitions combined, but he has yet to play in the Premier League.

His offensive prowess shone through in his last season with Wolves, when he finished 63 dribbles, scored four goals, and assisted on seven more.

Even though he still needs work on his decision-making, his close control, forward runs, and one-on-one defense have garnered praise from former Wolves coach Edu Rubio.

United could benefit from Ait-Nouri's attacking versatility at left back, but City's willingness to engage in another deal involving their local rivals is questionable, especially in light of their past dispute over transfer terms.
