Timo Werner has compared former Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante to Lionel Messi, praising the French midfielder’s ability to influence matches despite playing in a different position.
According to a report by Football London on Saturday, 7 November 2026, Werner believes Kante was an exceptional presence at Chelsea, particularly during their Champions League-winning campaign in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel.
Kante played a crucial role in Chelsea’s European success, delivering outstanding performances throughout the competition.
He was particularly impressive in the final against Manchester City, helping the Blues secure a 1-0 victory.
Werner, who played alongside the midfielder at Stamford Bridge, explained how Kante’s defensive qualities gave Chelsea an advantage over their opponents.
The former Germany international described Kante as a player who made his teammates feel as though they had an additional player on the pitch because of his ability to recover possession and cover ground.
Werner also compared the midfielder’s influence to Messi’s, explaining that although their positions and responsibilities were different, both players had the ability to change games.
He said Kante's presence allowed Chelsea's attacking players to concentrate on creating opportunities and troubling opposition defences, knowing the midfielder was providing protection behind them.
Kante's contribution during Chelsea's Champions League triumph remains one of the defining moments of his time at the club.
His performances demonstrated the importance of defensive midfielders who can influence matches beyond goals and assists.
Werner's comments underline the significant impact Kante had on Chelsea's success and the respect he earned from teammates who experienced his quality first-hand.
