According to a report by Evening Standard on Thursday October 22, 2026, Michael Carrick has admitted that he was “really angry” with Manchester United’s performance following their humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, as pressure continues to mount on the under-fire manager.
United suffered a damaging loss against Cesc Fabregas’ side on Wednesday, extending their winless run to seven consecutive matches across all competitions. The result left the Red Devils 22nd in the Champions League league-phase table after three games, with frustrated supporters calling for Carrick to be sacked.
Speaking after the match, Carrick made it clear that he was unhappy with what his players produced, insisting that the performance fell well below the standards expected at Old Trafford.
“I’m bitterly disappointed,” he said. “I’m frustrated, more than frustrated, I’m really angry to be honest.”
The United manager continued: “You’ve got to move on and think about what’s next. For us to play in that way is not acceptable, it wasn’t a good performance at all.”
Carrick had hoped his team would build on their performance in the 1-1 draw against Leeds United over the weekend. However, United struggled to match Como’s intensity and quality, spending much of the contest on the back foot as their opponents took control.
The defeat exposed significant weaknesses in United’s performance, with the players unable to demonstrate the organisation, aggression and determination needed to compete effectively. Nico Paz was among the standout performers for Como, scoring twice as the Italian side secured an emphatic victory.
Carrick was particularly disappointed by his team’s lack of intensity and fighting spirit, suggesting that the players failed to deliver the effort he expected from them.
“That bit of intensity, spirit, aggression and willingness to give everything [was not there],” he explained.
He added: “It was the total opposite of a performance, I have to say, and it was tough to watch.”
The manager’s comments underline the growing frustration surrounding Manchester United’s difficult run. While tactical issues have also come under scrutiny, Carrick’s assessment suggests that the players’ attitude and commitment were equally concerning during the defeat.
United now face the challenge of responding quickly when they welcome Bournemouth to Old Trafford on Sunday. Sitting 13th in the Premier League, the Red Devils desperately need a positive result to halt their poor run and ease the pressure on their manager.
Carrick’s future remains a major talking point following the calls for his dismissal, but the immediate priority will be improving performances and restoring confidence within the squad.
