According to a report from FootballTransfers, on Friday November 06, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly contacted Didier Deschamps as they assess alternatives to head coach Michael Carrick.
Carrick eased some pressure with a 3–2 comeback win over Roma in the Champions League, but his long-term future remains uncertain. United are expected to review his position during the next international break, following the club’s worst start to a season in 40 years.
Unai Emery is believed to be among the club’s preferred candidates, but persuading Aston Villa to part with their manager appears highly unlikely. Emery and key members of his staff are reportedly close to extending their contracts.
With Emery seemingly out of reach, United may consider other names, including Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte. Deschamps, who left his role as France manager this summer after 14 years, has also emerged as a possibility.
According to Foot Mercato, United contacted Deschamps in recent days to gauge his interest. He has never managed in England, though he spent a season at Chelsea as a player. Reports in Italy have also linked him with Juventus, but the French outlet says neither vacancy strongly appeals to him.
Deschamps guided France to the 2018 World Cup title and the 2022 final, before the team finished fourth this summer. He was also considered for Real Madrid’s managerial role but was overlooked.
The 58-year-old is in no hurry to return to management. After the death of his mother during the World Cup, he is spending time with his family and is reportedly willing to wait until next season before taking another job. It remains unclear whether United view him as a serious candidate.
