According to reports by TEAMtalk on Monday November 2, 2026, renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on Lisandro Martinez's future at Manchester United, revealing that the club's hierarchy is preparing to make an important decision about the defender's contract and long-term future.
Martinez has faced growing scrutiny following Manchester United's recent performances, with questions emerging about whether he will remain at Old Trafford beyond the current season.
The Argentine defender is approaching the final year of his contract, although Manchester United have an option to extend his stay for another season on the same terms.
His future has become a major talking point, particularly after reports linked him with Barcelona ahead of the January transfer window. The Spanish giants are reportedly interested in strengthening their defence, while Manchester United have also been linked with Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde.
A possible swap deal involving Martinez and Balde has therefore been discussed, although no agreement between the clubs has been confirmed.
Speaking about the situation on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that Manchester United and Martinez's representatives are expected to hold direct discussions over the coming days and weeks.
“The answer I am getting is that this month, over the next days and weeks, there will be direct contacts between Lisandro Martínez’s camp and Manchester United to assess the situation and consider all the possibilities,” Romano said.
He explained that the discussions would cover whether United should activate the extension clause, allow the defender to leave or retain him beyond the current season.
Romano also revealed that the club would consider several factors, including Martinez's behaviour, performances, future and contractual situation.
“So, talks are expected to follow regarding the future of Lisandro Martínez because this is going to be a big decision for Manchester United,” the journalist added.
The update comes after Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, during which Martinez received a red card. His dismissal increased criticism of the defender and added to the pressure surrounding his position in the team.
Romano further explained that if Martinez eventually leaves in 2027, Manchester United will need to recruit another centre-back to strengthen their defensive options.
The journalist noted that injuries and other defensive problems have already created difficulties for the club in recent months.
