Pablo Barrios is attracting growing attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are among those to have made enquiries about the Atletico Madrid midfielder ahead of the 2027 transfer windows.
The 23-year-old has developed into an increasingly important figure for Diego Simeone, combining defensive discipline with the technical ability to contribute further forward. His progress has also earned him four Spain caps and made him a regular target for scouts from across Europe.
United’s interest remains at an exploratory stage, with no formal negotiations currently taking place. However, the club have made an approach for information as they assess potential midfield reinforcements.
Their recent Champions League trip to Madrid provided another opportunity to assess Barrios at close quarters. The Spaniard scored after just 49 seconds in Atletico’s 2-0 victory over United, underlining the attacking threat that has increasingly become part of his game. Barrios has come a long way since joining Atletico’s academy after leaving Real Madrid in 2017. He made his senior debut in 2023 and has since accumulated 151 appearances for the club.
Manchester United face significant competition if their interest develops into a concrete pursuit. Chelsea have repeatedly monitored Barrios, with Xabi Alonso understood to be an admirer of his profile. However, the Blues currently have Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott higher on their list, particularly for the January window.
Arsenal and Liverpool are also keeping track of the situation, while Manchester City have previously shown an interest. Paris Saint-Germain could represent the most serious threat to Atletico’s position. Sources indicate that Luis Enrique is a strong admirer of Barrios, and PSG are among the clubs capable of testing Atletico’s resolve financially.
A January move remains difficult, however. Atletico have no desire to sell and Barrios is tied to the club until June 2030. His contract contains a €500 million release clause, giving Atletico enormous leverage even if no realistic buyer would contemplate paying that amount. The clause effectively allows the Spanish club to determine the starting point for any negotiations.
Only an exceptional proposal is likely to force Atletico into serious discussions, making a summer transfer considerably more plausible than an immediate January departure. For United, that timeline could prove important. If their midfield requires further restructuring after the club’s more measured recruitment approach, Barrios could become a more serious target next summer.
Barrios is an interesting target for United because he offers something that cannot be measured simply through goals and assists: midfield balance. His defensive instincts allow him to operate as the player who protects possession rather than merely progressing it. He can step into challenges, cover space and then immediately contribute to the next phase with the ball. That combination is increasingly valuable in a Premier League midfield where transitions can decide matches.
His development under Simeone is particularly relevant. Atletico’s midfielders are expected to understand when to press, when to hold their position and when to accelerate an attack. Barrios has gradually added that tactical maturity to his technical game.
United would nevertheless need to decide exactly where he fits. He is not simply a defensive midfielder, nor is he a traditional attacking No.8. His greatest value could come in a system that gives him freedom to move between those responsibilities while another midfielder provides positional security.
That versatility also explains the wider interest. Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and PSG could all use a midfielder capable of changing the balance of a game without necessarily dominating the statistics. Atletico therefore have little incentive to negotiate cheaply and the €500m clause is unrealistic, but it sends a very realistic message: Barrios will only leave if someone makes Atletico’s decision extremely difficult.
For United, this looks more like the beginning of a recruitment process than an imminent transfer but if their midfield remains an area of concern, Barrios could become one of their most interesting targets for summer 2027.
