Six Chelsea changes for Liverpool as Xabi Alonso tasks Estevao with Cole Palmer challenge

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso is considering making six changes to his starting line-up for Wednesday's Carabao Cup fourth-round encounter against Liverpool at Anfield, with Estevao Willian expected to assume greater attacking responsibility in Cole Palmer's absence.

Alonso is considering rotating his squad following Chelsea's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. The Blues will travel to Anfield on Wednesday, October 28, before facing Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Mike Penders is expected to retain his place in goal after Alonso confirmed that the young Belgian goalkeeper would feature against Liverpool. Although Penders endured a difficult Premier League debut against Tottenham, conceding an own goal after misjudging a corner, the upcoming cup fixture could provide him with another opportunity to demonstrate his abilities.

Wesley Fofana could replace Josh Acheampong in defence as Alonso looks to manage the teenager's workload ahead of the weekend's clash with Manchester United. Levi Colwill and Maxence Lacroix are expected to complete a three-man defensive unit.

Marco Palestra and Malo Gusto are potential starters in the wing-back positions. However, Chelsea's injury concerns and the fitness of several players could influence Alonso's final selection.

Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia are also expected to feature together in midfield. Alonso is weighing up how best to manage Moises Caicedo's minutes following his recent return from injury, while Jordan Henderson remains another option in the centre of the pitch.

In attack, Estevao could be handed an important role following Palmer's suspension. The England international was sent off during Chelsea's defeat to Tottenham and will therefore miss Wednesday's cup encounter.

The Brazilian youngster will have an opportunity to showcase his creativity and attacking qualities against Liverpool as he attempts to secure more regular starts. Geovany Quenda could join him in supporting the attack, while Danny Welbeck is expected to lead the forward line.

Chelsea's predicted starting XI: Mike Penders; Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix, Wesley Fofana; Marco Palestra, Valentin Barco, Romeo Lavia, Malo Gusto; Geovany Quenda, Estevao Willian; Danny Welbeck.
