According to a report by Metro on Thursday October 22, 2026, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has delivered a scathing assessment of the club's current situation, admitting that winning trophies has become increasingly difficult at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese midfielder spoke out following United's disappointing Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday, a result that extended their winless run to seven games across all competitions and increased the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italy, Fernandes insisted that Manchester United must stop relying on their past achievements and focus on making changes to improve their present situation.
“Everyone at the club must understand that it’s not the same thing any more,” Fernandes said. “We’re not in the past and we need to look at the future. We need to do things different in the present."
The United captain also admitted that players arrive at the club expecting to compete for major honours, but recent struggles have made those ambitions difficult to achieve.
“Unfortunately for us, as a group of players, every time you come to this club you think about winning trophies and winning games, and being in the highest level but unfortunately it’s been very difficult at this club in the last few years. That’s the situation,” he added.
Fernandes' comments came after United suffered a heavy defeat against Como, further intensifying scrutiny of Carrick and the team's performances this season.
However, Carrick disagreed with his captain's assessment when asked whether he shared the same view of the club's problems. “No, I don’t. But right now it’s a long way from that,” the United manager responded.
Carrick acknowledged that United's start to the season had been far below expectations, insisting that the team needed to improve significantly after a difficult run of results.
