According to a report by Metro on October 22, 2026, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged Michael Carrick to drop captain Bruno Fernandes from the starting lineup for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth.
Rooney believes the Portugal international needs a short break after a demanding run of matches, arguing that time away from the spotlight could help him regain his sharpness and improve his performances.
Manchester United are preparing to face Bournemouth at Old Trafford amid growing pressure on Carrick following a disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign. Their problems deepened on Wednesday when they suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, extending their winless run in all competitions to seven matches.
The result has increased scrutiny of Carrick and his players, with United struggling to find consistency under their permanent manager. The club are also reportedly considering their options should results fail to improve.
Fernandes has attracted particular attention after criticising Carrick’s tactics following the defeat in Italy. However, Rooney believes the midfielder’s recent performances suggest that he could benefit from being rested.
Speaking on The United Stand, the former Manchester United captain said Fernandes might need the manager to tell him to take a short holiday because of the number of games he has played.
Rooney explained that Fernandes had endured a long season before participating in the World Cup, leaving him potentially fatigued at the beginning of the new campaign.
He also compared the situation to former manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s treatment of Cristiano Ronaldo, recalling how the legendary manager occasionally gave the Portuguese forward time off to recharge his batteries.
According to Rooney, Fernandes needs to step away from the pressure surrounding the club and return with renewed energy. He warned that continuing to play without sufficient rest could leave the midfielder increasingly frustrated and prevent him from performing at his best.
Fernandes enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 season, winning the Premier League Player of the Year award after scoring nine goals and providing a record 21 assists. He has scored four goals so far this season, although three came against newly promoted Ipswich Town in August.
Rooney also expressed his disappointment with United’s overall performance against Como, describing the players as selfish and accusing them of failing to take responsibility for the team’s struggles.
