AST 2-1 MCI: Match Review And Latest Premier League Table

According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday October 24, 2026, Aston Villa secured a memorable 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League, handing Enzo Maresca's side their first league defeat of the season after an impressive performance at Villa Park.

Villa started aggressively and were rewarded in the sixth minute when Nicolas Jackson finished brilliantly into the top-left corner following John McGinn’s perfectly weighted pass, giving the hosts an early advantage.

Manchester City responded by dominating possession and searching for an equaliser. However, Villa defended resolutely, while goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced important saves to deny Rayan Cherki and Iliman Ndiaye during City's attacking spells.

Ndiaye came agonisingly close to restoring parity in the 28th minute, striking the left post with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area. City continued pushing, but Villa maintained their defensive organisation throughout the opening period.

City eventually found their breakthrough seven minutes after halftime. Erling Haaland rose inside the penalty area to head home Iliman Ndiaye’s inviting delivery in the 52nd minute, bringing the visitors level.

Jeremy Doku nearly completed the comeback shortly afterwards, but his effort from the edge of the box narrowly missed the target. City appeared increasingly dangerous, although Villa remained capable of exploiting spaces during attacking transitions.

Jackson delivered another decisive moment in the 60th minute, restoring Villa’s advantage with a composed finish into the bottom-right corner after receiving an excellent pass. His second goal put the hosts firmly in control.

Manchester City attempted to respond through patient passing and sustained pressure. Josko Gvardiol headed narrowly wide in the 66th minute, while Doku also threatened, but Villa successfully resisted their opponents’ late efforts.

Despite enjoying spells of possession, City struggled to find another breakthrough during the closing stages. Villa managed the remaining minutes confidently, securing three valuable points and ending City's unbeaten Premier League start.
