According to a report by London Evening Standard on Friday October 23, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has provided an encouraging update on Emi Martinez’s recovery from a fractured jaw, suggesting the goalkeeper could return earlier than initially anticipated as the Blues prepare to face Tottenham.
Chelsea welcome their London rivals to Stamford Bridge this weekend, but Martinez will be unavailable for the crucial encounter following an injury sustained against Everton last weekend.
The Argentine goalkeeper suffered the problem after a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. He was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital, where he underwent successful surgery.
Martinez was initially expected to spend four to six weeks recovering. However, Alonso has indicated that the goalkeeper could return towards the earlier end of that timeframe, depending on his progress and medical advice.
“He is doing better,” Alonso said when discussing the goalkeeper’s condition.
“He had the surgery and day by day he is feeling better. We still need to wait. A few weeks. Hopefully less rather than more.”
The Chelsea boss stressed that the medical team’s assessment would determine the next steps, while expressing satisfaction with Martinez’s progress despite the seriousness of the injury.
“Considering it was a bad one, he is doing good,” Alonso added.
Young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders is expected to continue between the posts while Martinez completes his recovery. The Tottenham derby will provide another opportunity for the youngster to demonstrate his ability.
Alonso also delivered updates on full-backs Malo Gusto and Pep Chavarria ahead of the weekend fixture. Gusto is available for selection after missing last weekend’s trip to Everton because of illness.
Chavarria, however, will not feature against Tottenham as he continues working towards full fitness following a minor injury.
The defender travelled with the squad to face Everton and was initially expected to start, but his late withdrawal saw Jorrel Hato enter the starting lineup. Hato subsequently contributed to Pedro Neto’s opening goal.
“Malo is fine. Pep is still training a little bit more but is not going to make it,” Alonso confirmed.
Chelsea will therefore welcome Gusto’s return while continuing to manage Martinez’s recovery and Chavarria’s absence as they prepare for a fiercely contested London derby.
