According to a report by The Punch published on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester United are considering a January move for Nigerian international defender Calvin Bassey as they seek to address their defensive problems and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.
The Fulham centre-back has reportedly attracted the attention of United's recruitment team following his impressive displays in the current campaign. A report cited by The Punch from TEAMtalk indicates that the 26-year-old has become one of Fulham's most dependable performers despite the London club experiencing inconsistent results.
United's interest comes after a disappointing run of defensive performances that has exposed significant weaknesses in their backline. The Red Devils have conceded seven goals across their last two competitive fixtures, suffering a 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League before losing 3-0 to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
These results have increased concerns about the defensive options available to manager Michael Carrick, particularly as several players face questions surrounding their development, fitness and contractual situations.
Young defenders Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are still gaining experience at the highest level, while Harry Maguire is approaching his 34th birthday in March and has entered the final year of his current agreement.
Lisandro Martinez is also approaching the final year of his contract, creating further uncertainty about United's long-term defensive arrangements. Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt has only recently returned to action following an extended injury absence.
Bassey has therefore emerged as a potential solution to some of the club's defensive concerns, although Manchester United could face considerable competition for his signature.
Premier League rivals Everton and Newcastle United are reportedly keeping track of the Nigerian defender's situation. Interest has also emerged from continental Europe, with Italian side Inter Milan and German clubs Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig linked with a possible transfer.
Another factor that could influence negotiations is Bassey's contractual position at Fulham. His current deal is scheduled to expire at the end of the ongoing season, although the club possesses an option to extend the agreement for an additional 12 months.
This situation could create an opportunity for interested clubs to negotiate a transfer, particularly if Fulham become concerned about losing the defender without receiving an acceptable financial return.
Manchester United will therefore need to assess their options carefully if they intend to compete for the Nigerian international's signature when the January transfer window opens.
