Barcelona Identify Manchester United Defender Lisandro Martinez as January Transfer Opportunity

According to a report by Barca Universal on Saturday October 31, 2026, Barcelona are reportedly considering Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez as a potential January signing, with uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford potentially creating an opportunity for the Spanish giants.

According to reports, the Argentine international has emerged as one of Barcelona's most attainable defensive targets ahead of the winter transfer window, particularly because his current contract expires in June 2027.

At 28, Martinez offers valuable experience, international pedigree and familiarity with competing at the highest level. Barcelona could also benefit if Manchester United agree to negotiate a reduced transfer fee.

Relations between the defender and United's hierarchy have reportedly deteriorated, raising questions about whether he will remain at the Premier League club beyond the current campaign.

The situation intensified following United's Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, when Martinez publicly questioned the club's recruitment strategy and called for greater investment in the squad.

His comments generated criticism in England, including from former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney. Martinez subsequently apologised, but uncertainty surrounding his long-term future has continued.

United could now face an important decision regarding his contract. With his existing agreement due to expire in 2027, the January window could represent an opportunity to collect a transfer fee rather than risk losing him without compensation.

Meanwhile, Barcelona's interest comes as sporting director Deco evaluates potential reinforcements for the centre-back position, with several injury problems exposing weaknesses in the defensive department.

Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Xavi Espart and Jules Kounde have reportedly experienced injury issues, increasing concerns about the squad's defensive depth and strengthening the argument for recruiting another defender.

Martinez's contractual situation could make him a more realistic option than other candidates Barcelona are considering, although any potential agreement would depend on Manchester United's financial demands.

His experience in European competitions and achievements with Argentina, including winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, would provide Barcelona with an experienced defensive option.

However, the Catalan club must carefully assess the transfer fee, salary demands and overall financial implications before committing to a deal. His injury history and suitability for Hansi Flick's defensive system will also require consideration.

Barcelona could additionally face competition from Atletico Madrid, who have reportedly entered the race for the Argentine defender.

Although Martinez represents a potentially attractive solution to Barcelona's defensive concerns, his availability, financial demands and fitness record will ultimately determine whether the club pursues a January transfer.
