According to Sky Sports, published on October 23, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has admitted that his team has lost its way following a disappointing run of results, but remains confident that he can restore the club’s identity.
Carrick made the admission during his press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth. His comments followed United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, a result that extended their winless run in all competitions to seven matches.
The manager acknowledged that United had fallen below the standards expected of a club of their stature. He described the performance in Italy as unacceptable and admitted that watching the team struggle had been particularly painful.
Carrick also accepted responsibility for improving the situation. He explained that his job was to build a team that represented Manchester United and gave supporters a performance and identity they could be proud of.
The Englishman recalled a more successful spell during which he was satisfied with the team’s approach and performances. However, he admitted that recent displays had not matched those standards and said he was working to address the problems.
He highlighted humility, hard work, sacrifice and resilience as important values that must guide everyone representing the club. Carrick also stressed that Manchester United must always come before any individual, including the manager and the players.
His remarks came amid growing pressure following the defeat to Como and questions about the team’s performances. Captain Bruno Fernandes had also criticised the coaching staff’s tactical approach after the match, adding to the attention surrounding the club.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Carrick insisted that he believes United can recover. He acknowledged that the team had moved away from the standards he wanted but maintained that the situation could be corrected through hard work and a renewed commitment to the club’s principles.
“We’ve kind of lost our way, but I am convinced we’ll get it back,” Carrick said.
United now face Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, with the match providing an opportunity to respond to their recent setbacks.
For Carrick, the immediate challenge is to turn his message into better performances on the pitch and restore confidence among supporters who have been disappointed by the team’s recent results.
