'Congratulations' - FIFA President Infantino hails Nigeria’s Flamingos after historic triumph

According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday November 8, 2026, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has congratulated Nigeria's Flamingos following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.

The Nigerian youngsters made history on Saturday night after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat to become champions of the world.

Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku secured the memorable victory for Nigeria, while Fuki Ito scored a late consolation goal for Japan.

The triumph represents a landmark achievement for Nigerian football, as the Flamingos became the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

They also made history as the first African women's team to win a FIFA World Cup title at any level, further underlining the importance of their achievement for the continent.

Reacting shortly after the final, Infantino took to the occasion to congratulate Nigeria for their outstanding performance and historic accomplishment.

The FIFA president expressed his admiration for the young Nigerian players, describing their victory as well deserved.

"Congratulations to Nigeria, world champion U-17 Women’s World Cup of FIFA here in Rabat," Infantino said.

He further highlighted the significance of the achievement, pointing out that Nigeria had become the first African country to win the competition.

"First African team to ever win a (FIFA) Women’s U-17 World Cup, so many congratulations to Nigeria. Well deserved in the final," he added.

Infantino also congratulated Japan for finishing as runners-up and DPR Korea for securing third place at the tournament.

He equally commended Morocco for successfully hosting the competition, which brought together some of the best young women's football teams from around the world.

Meanwhile, the Flamingos' journey to the title was particularly impressive because they had to overcome an early setback during the group stage.

Nigeria suffered an opening-group defeat but responded positively, showing determination and resilience to put together a winning run that eventually carried them into the final.

Their victory over Japan was the perfect conclusion to an impressive campaign under head coach Akeem Busari.

Japan, who had previously reached the final of the competition four times, entered the encounter with considerable experience, but Nigeria showed their quality and determination to secure the trophy.

The victory is expected to provide a major boost to women's football in Nigeria and across Africa.

For years, African teams have worked towards winning a major FIFA women's international title, and the Flamingos have now achieved what no other African side had managed before.

Their success also provides inspiration for young girls across Nigeria who hope to become professional footballers and represent their country at the highest level.
