According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha will not face any additional disciplinary punishment from UEFA despite briefly returning to the pitch after being sent off during the club's dramatic Champions League comeback victory over Roma.
The Brazilian striker played a crucial role in United's remarkable recovery after they fell two goals behind. Cunha scored twice in the closing stages, finding the net in the 83rd and 86th minutes to complete an impressive turnaround and secure a memorable victory for Michael Carrick's side.
However, his celebrations took an unexpected turn when he received two yellow cards, resulting in his dismissal. Following his sending-off, the 27-year-old watched the remaining moments of the encounter from an advertising hoarding.
After the final whistle, Cunha returned to the pitch to celebrate the victory with supporters in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand and embrace his teammates. His decision to re-enter the playing area attracted the attention of Carrick, who immediately instructed him to leave.
Cunha briefly applauded supporters at the Stretford End before being escorted towards the tunnel. Although Carrick was concerned about the forward's decision to return after receiving a red card, UEFA has confirmed that the incident will not result in further disciplinary proceedings.
A UEFA representative explained that there was no reason to extend Cunha's punishment or launch an investigation because his return to the pitch was not included in the official match reports.
Consequently, the forward will serve only the automatic one-match suspension resulting from his two yellow cards. This means he will miss Manchester United's upcoming Champions League fixture against Sporting later this month.
Despite the controversy surrounding his dismissal, Carrick acknowledged Cunha's significant contribution to the comeback. The United manager had adjusted the Brazilian's position during the interval, exchanging his role with Bryan Mbeumo to give him greater freedom in central attacking areas.
The tactical adjustment proved effective, as Cunha became more influential and eventually delivered the goals that transformed the contest.
Carrick was particularly pleased with the forward's determination, attacking quality and commitment, believing his energy and passion were important factors behind United's impressive second-half performance.
