Cole Palmer To Miss Chelsea Vs Liverpool Carabao Cup Clash After Tottenham Red Card

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer will miss the Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool after being sent off during the Blues' Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a report by Football London on Saturday, 24 October 2026, Palmer received two yellow cards during Chelsea's London derby at Stamford Bridge, leaving manager Xabi Alonso without one of his key attacking players for the trip to Anfield.

The England international was first booked after barging into Mateus Fernandes, an incident that sparked a confrontation between players.

He was subsequently dismissed for a challenge on former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, having left his studs on the Tottenham player while the Blues were trailing 1-0.

Palmer's dismissal means he will serve a one-match suspension against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup. Premier League red-card suspensions carry over to domestic competitions, making him unavailable for the midweek encounter.

However, the 24-year-old is expected to return for Chelsea's Premier League fixture against Manchester United next week, having completed his suspension.

The red card was the first of Palmer's professional career and contributed to Chelsea reaching their 100th dismissal in Premier League history. Only Everton and Arsenal have received more red cards in the competition.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville criticised Palmer's actions during the closing stages of the match, believing the midfielder had lost his composure.

"He's spot on the referee, Cole Palmer has lost his head in the last 10 minutes," Neville said.

"That one is no brainer. That's just a silly challenge, he knows exactly what he's doing. Not a good challenge, naughty, really naughty."

Chelsea manager Alonso admitted his team had fallen below expectations against Tottenham, although he said he had not seen Palmer's fouls.

"We are all disappointed with the result, with the performance collectively and individually we were not at our best level," he said. "It was about the first goal and it went their way and with 10 men it was difficult but we can do better."

The Chelsea boss also highlighted his team's shortcomings in attack, explaining that both sides had created limited opportunities during the contest.

"We wanted to have this fluidity in the middle. We wanted the pockets filed with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers. There were situations but overall we have to do better."
