According to a report by Football London on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Chelsea's reported interest in Gustavo Varela has raised questions about whether the club genuinely need another centre-forward, especially with Joao Pedro already playing an important role in Xabi Alonso's attacking system.
The Blues are understood to be keeping a close eye on the Portuguese youngster, who has attracted attention across Europe following his impressive performances for Monza in Serie A.
Varela has made an outstanding start to the season, scoring nine goals in nine league appearances to become the Italian top flight's leading goalscorer. His achievement is particularly remarkable considering Monza's difficult campaign, with the club managing just two victories from their opening 10 matches and currently sitting in the relegation zone.
Chelsea are not alone in their interest, as Arsenal and Tottenham are also reportedly monitoring the 21-year-old's situation. This could create significant competition should the Blues decide to make a formal approach.
However, Monza are said to be unwilling to lose one of their most influential players during the January transfer window. Their position could force interested clubs to delay any attempts to sign him until the summer of 2027.
Despite his impressive goalscoring record, Varela remains relatively inexperienced at the highest level of professional football. His progress has only recently gathered momentum following a loan spell with Gil Vicente last season.
A potential move to Stamford Bridge would also create questions about how Chelsea intend to accommodate another striker within their current attacking options. Joao Pedro has already established himself as an important member of Alonso's squad, while Danny Welbeck arrived during the summer to provide additional quality and competition in attack.
Nevertheless, Joao Pedro's recurring injury problems could be one of the reasons behind Chelsea's reported interest in strengthening their centre-forward position. However, if the Brazilian manages to maintain his fitness, Alonso could struggle to provide consistent playing time to another striker.
Chelsea's recent transfer history also highlights the potential risks of adding more attacking players to the squad. Several forwards have struggled to meet expectations at Stamford Bridge, although Joao Pedro, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku have experienced varying degrees of success.
Jackson's departure is another important factor in assessing Chelsea's interest in Varela. The Senegalese striker recorded 34 goals and assists in 65 Premier League appearances for the Blues before completing a move to Aston Villa.
He also impressed during his loan spell at Bayern Munich, where he registered 11 goals and four assists. Jackson has reportedly maintained that form since joining Aston Villa, scoring six times in seven appearances and prompting further questions about Chelsea's decision to let him leave.
Although Varela's remarkable performances in front of goal make him an attractive prospect, Chelsea must carefully consider whether bringing in another centre-forward would genuinely strengthen Alonso's squad or simply increase competition for limited opportunities.
