Matheus Cunha faces extra Champions League ban for breaking rules straight after Man United win

According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha could face an extended Champions League suspension after allegedly breaking disciplinary rules following the club's dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The Brazilian forward was the hero of the evening after scoring twice to help United complete an impressive comeback against the Italian side. However, his contribution was overshadowed by a red card and his actions after the final whistle, which could result in further punishment.

United endured a difficult first half and went into the break trailing 2-0 following a disappointing opening 45 minutes. Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the second half before Cunha scored twice to turn the game around and secure all three points for Michael Carrick's side.

However, Cunha's celebration following his winning goal resulted in a yellow card. The 27-year-old received another booking a few minutes later and was subsequently sent off.

The forward watched the closing stages of the encounter from an advertising board after being dismissed, but another incident occurred after the final whistle.

Cunha attempted to return to the pitch to celebrate United's victory with his teammates before being approached by Carrick. The pair appeared to exchange words, with the United manager seemingly instructing the Brazilian to return to the dressing room.

The forward looked frustrated during the interaction and was eventually escorted away from the pitch by a member of staff.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Cunha could face additional disciplinary action because of his apparent attempt to re-enter the field after being sent off.

Under IFAB Law 12, which covers fouls and misconduct, players who receive a red card must leave the field and proceed to the dressing room or a spectator area.

Returning to the pitch after dismissal could be considered a breach of the regulations and potentially lead to an extended suspension. The player could also face a fine, while Manchester United could receive financial punishment.

However, it remains unclear whether Cunha will receive additional punishment, with the referee's official match report expected to provide further clarity on the situation.

The Brazilian will already miss Manchester United's next Champions League fixture against Sporting CP later this month because of his red card. Any additional suspension would be another setback for Carrick, who will want to have one of his attacking options available for the remaining European fixtures.

Speaking after the victory, Cunha expressed his happiness at helping United secure an important comeback, although he admitted that the red card was an unfortunate part of an otherwise memorable evening.

"What a magic day. Of course, apart from the red card," he said.

The forward also spoke about the responsibility he feels when the team finds itself in difficult situations, insisting that he is always prepared to step up when needed.

He added that the team's mentality during the second half was impressive and expressed hope that the victory would become a turning point in their season.

Cunha also explained the difficulty he experienced while celebrating his second goal, revealing that he initially struggled to identify whether the supporters in the section he approached were Manchester United or Roma fans.
