According to a report by The Athletic on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Manchester United’s board has decided to wait until the November international break before making a final decision on Michael Carrick’s managerial future following the club’s disappointing 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult period, with Saturday’s loss extending their winless run to nine matches in all competitions. The disappointing results have placed Carrick under increasing pressure, leaving his future at Old Trafford uncertain.
The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell reports that Manchester United’s senior officials have privately agreed to give the manager until the international break before deciding whether changes are necessary. This suggests that the club is not planning to take immediate action despite the growing dissatisfaction surrounding the team's performances.
Carrick will therefore have the opportunity to improve Manchester United's situation in their remaining matches before the break. The team is expected to meet Roma in the Champions League before returning to Premier League action against Aston Villa.
Nevertheless, the agreement reached by the hierarchy does not guarantee that Carrick will continue as manager after the international break. His results in the forthcoming fixtures are expected to play an important role in determining whether he retains his position.
The defeat against Chelsea has made the situation particularly uncomfortable for Manchester United. Both sides struggled to find the breakthrough in the first half, but Chelsea eventually took the advantage after the interval.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for the home team before Manchester United suffered another setback when Lisandro Martinez was shown a red card for his challenge on Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area.
Cole Palmer converted the penalty to extend Chelsea's advantage and seal a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
The result has left Manchester United 17th in the Premier League standings, increasing fears about their position as they remain dangerously close to the relegation places.
Despite the mounting speculation, Carrick has remained focused on the next assignment and indicated that he expects to lead the team in its upcoming fixture.
Meanwhile, the club has reportedly begun considering alternative managerial options should the decision eventually be made to dismiss him. Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are among the names being discussed, while Aston Villa boss Unai Emery and Antonio Conte have also been linked with the vacancy.
Manchester United's next two matches could consequently become crucial to Carrick's future, with the club's hierarchy waiting to see whether he can turn things around before the November international break.
