Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager for their Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Sunday despite mounting pressure following the club’s humiliating Champions League defeat to Como.
According to a report by Metro on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United have decided to maintain their current arrangements ahead of the weekend fixture, with Carrick’s position not considered under immediate threat.
The decision comes after United suffered a damaging 4-1 defeat against Como in Italy on Wednesday, further increasing scrutiny of Carrick’s leadership and tactical approach.
Captain Bruno Fernandes also publicly criticised the manager’s tactics following the disappointing performance, adding to the growing concerns surrounding the club’s direction.
United have collected just seven points from their opening seven Premier League matches, with their only victory coming against newly promoted Ipswich Town in August.
Despite the poor run, Carrick is expected to lead preparations for Bournemouth, with the squad given Thursday off after returning to the United Kingdom in the early hours following their European defeat.
The former midfielder is scheduled to address the media at his usual pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.
However, the Bournemouth fixture could prove important for Carrick as United prepare for a difficult run of matches.
After hosting the Cherries, they will travel to Chelsea on October 31 before facing Roma in the Champions League.
United will subsequently host Aston Villa before the final international break of the year.
Meanwhile, reports suggest the club have begun identifying potential replacements should they decide to make a managerial change.
Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has emerged as a possible candidate, while Napoli boss Antonio Conte has also been linked with the position.
Julian Nagelsmann, who is reportedly interested in returning to club management, is another name mentioned in discussions surrounding the vacancy.
Other potential candidates include Fabian Hurzeler, Kieran McKenna and Cesc Fabregas.
