Insider: Manchester United Target One of Football’s Best Defenders

According to a report by footballTransfers on Tuesday November 3, 2026, Manchester United have been tracking Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey since last season, according to a source close to the Nigeria international.

The defender has recently been linked with a possible move to Old Trafford in 2027 as United consider strengthening their back line.

Bassey, 26, joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023. Although he took time to settle in English football, he has since become a reliable presence in the heart of the defence.

His performances, physical strength and leadership have helped raise his profile, with the source describing him as one of the Premier League’s best defenders.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, the source said United’s interest was not new. They also highlighted Bassey’s imposing frame, competitive style and leadership qualities, which have reportedly seen him take on greater responsibility at Fulham.

When asked about the transfer speculation, Bassey is said to have neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

United are expected to assess their options at centre-back, with Lisandro Martínez’s future reportedly uncertain. Bassey’s experience in the Premier League could make him an attractive candidate as the club plans for the 2027 season.

However, any potential transfer will depend in part on Fulham’s contract decisions. Bassey’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season, but the London club hold an option to extend it by a year.

Fulham are also understood to be keen to negotiate a new contract with the defender.

Those factors make a January transfer appear unlikely. If Fulham activate their extension and Bassey does not agree to fresh terms, the club could consider selling him next summer rather than risk losing him for nothing when his contract eventually expires.

United have often targeted players with Premier League experience in recent transfer windows.

Bassey’s form and contract situation could therefore make him a name to watch, although no agreement is reported to be close.

For now, Fulham retain control of the situation, and Bassey has made no public commitment about where he wants to play next season.
