According to a report by Daily Mail on Friday October 23, 2026, Antonio Conte has broken his silence on speculation linking him with the Manchester United managerial job amid growing pressure on Michael Carrick following the club's disappointing results.
The former Chelsea and Napoli manager has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Carrick, whose position has come under increasing scrutiny after Manchester United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.
Reports in Italy had suggested that Conte wanted full control over transfers and the freedom to appoint his preferred backroom staff before agreeing to take charge at Old Trafford.
However, the Italian has dismissed reports about the demands he has allegedly made, insisting that negotiations with interested clubs are not at an advanced stage.
“My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage,” Conte said.
The 57-year-old added that he intends to take his time before deciding when and where to return to management after leaving Napoli in the summer.
“Following a wonderful and successful spell in charge of Napoli, I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return to management. It will be a carefully considered decision, one I will make when I believe the conditions are right,” he explained.
Conte also rejected reports suggesting he had already made financial demands or requested complete control over recruitment at the clubs linked with him.
He said such reports were “unfounded”, adding that discussions about the terms of a potential agreement would only take place if a concrete opportunity emerged.
His comments leave the door open to a possible return to management, although there is no confirmation that Manchester United have reached an agreement with him.
United are reportedly considering several candidates should they decide to part ways with Carrick. Eddie Howe, Fabian Hurzeler and Unai Emery are among the Premier League-experienced managers mentioned, while director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is reportedly pushing for Julian Nagelsmann.
The club's managerial situation has become increasingly complicated following the defeat to Como, with captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioning aspects of the team's tactics.
Conte has a strong track record, having won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017 and the Serie A title with Napoli. However, his demanding approach and previous disagreements with players and club officials could be important considerations for United.
