According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday October 22, 2026, Barcelona youngster Xavi Espart is reportedly expected to start at right-back against Real Madrid on Sunday after delivering an impressive performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
According to AS journalist Javi Miguel, the 19-year-old academy graduate has earned Hansi Flick’s confidence, while Jules Kounde remains doubtful to start because of an ankle injury.
Espart caught attention during Barcelona’s meeting with PSG, helping restrict the threat posed by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before scoring a goal to cap an outstanding individual performance.
His contribution has reportedly strengthened his chances of retaining the right-back position for El Clasico, with Barcelona preparing for another difficult examination against their historic rivals.
The teenager has emerged as one of Barcelona’s encouraging young prospects this season. Flick had previously appreciated his performances at left-back, where he has competed with established options Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde.
However, his display against PSG on the opposite flank has further demonstrated his versatility, defensive awareness and ability to contribute offensively when Barcelona need additional attacking support.
Against Real Madrid, Espart could face Yan Diomande, with Vinicius Junior unavailable through suspension. Despite the different challenge, his performance against Kvaratskhelia has reportedly strengthened Flick’s belief in his abilities.
Remarkably, Espart delivered his impressive display despite experiencing quadriceps discomfort before the match. He reportedly worked with a physiotherapist to manage the problem ahead of the European encounter.
The youngster also suffered a heavy knock to his ankle during the game, but reports indicate that neither issue is expected to prevent him from featuring against Real Madrid on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Kounde’s ankle sprain has created an opportunity for Espart to establish himself in Barcelona’s starting lineup for the crucial encounter at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Even if the French defender returns to the matchday squad, he is reportedly unlikely to start and could instead be limited to a brief appearance from the bench.
Unless circumstances change, Barcelona could field the same defensive line that started against PSG, with Espart and Cancelo occupying the full-back positions while Pau Cubarsi partners Gerard Martin centrally.
Beyond El Clasico, Espart’s growing confidence could influence Flick’s defensive selections, particularly if the teenager continues delivering impressive performances against elite opposition throughout the season.
