Ryan Giggs Receives Special Invite to Manchester United Champions League Fixture

According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Tuesday October 20, 2026, the former Old Trafford star Ryan Giggs will get to see some old acquaintances at Wednesday's Champions League match between Manchester United and Como, thanks to a special invitation he received.

The Welshman was one of United's most successful players during Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure as manager, and he had an incredible career overall. He became known as one of football's most decorated players thanks to his accomplishments.

During his twenty-four years with United's first squad, Giggs helped the club win thirteen Premier League crowns and two Champions League medals. In addition, he made 963 appearances, which is still the most ever for United.

After hanging up his boots, Giggs got into coaching, first as Old Trafford's assistant manager and then, in January 2018, taking over for Chris Coleman as Wales manager.

Giggs was a colleague of Osian Roberts's while he was a Welsh player. Roberts had been an assistant coach under Coleman and had a hand in Wales's semi-final appearance at Euro 2016.

For Wednesday's European encounter at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium in Italy, Roberts—now the head of development for Como—has extended an invitation to Giggs. In an interview with The Sun, he confirmed the invitation.

Roberts was overjoyed that Giggs would be in attendance, noting that the two had kept in touch since their time together on the Welsh national team.

During their visit, the two will likely watch the Under-19 team from Como, and Giggs will have the chance to have coffee with head coach Cesc Fabregas.

Under Giggs's leadership, Wales qualified for Euro 2020 after playing in 25 matches (12 wins). Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the tournament to be delayed until 2021.

Robert Page succeeded him as manager of the Welsh national team after he left in November 2020.

Still, Giggs's incredible run at Manchester United, where he won four FA Cups in addition to league and European titles, is what people remember him for most.

He scored in United's 1999 Champions League semi-final match against Juventus and was instrumental in United's 2008 Moscow penalty shootout victory over Chelsea.

The fact that Giggs scored 28 goals in 145 Champions League appearances is just one more example of the enduring impact he had on European football.
