Antonio Conte Makes Two Demands to Manchester United Over Replacing Michael Carrick

According to a report by Metro on Friday, October 23, 2026, Antonio Conte has reportedly held talks with Manchester United over the possibility of replacing Michael Carrick as manager, although the Italian tactician has established two major conditions that must be met before he agrees to take charge at Old Trafford.

Carrick’s position has come under increasing pressure following Manchester United’s disappointing 4-0 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday. The result has intensified concerns about the club’s poor start to the campaign, with performances and results falling below expectations.

United have recorded just two victories in eleven matches across all competitions this season, raising serious questions about the team’s direction. Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, but another disappointing display could put an end to his managerial spell.

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Conte is interested in returning to English football and has communicated his expectations to senior Manchester United officials during discussions earlier this week.

His first major condition reportedly concerns recruitment, with the former Chelsea manager seeking substantial control over transfer decisions. Conte wants the authority to reshape the squad, particularly during the January transfer window and next summer, to ensure the team has the players required to compete at the highest level.

The second demand involves having a decisive say in assessing the current squad. Conte reportedly wants to determine which players fit into his plans and which individuals should be allowed to leave. He is also expected to request the inclusion of trusted members of his coaching team if an agreement is reached.

Conte has previously demonstrated his ability to deliver immediate success in England. He guided Chelsea to the Premier League title in 2017 during his first season at Stamford Bridge, establishing himself as a manager capable of transforming a team within a short period.

However, financial considerations could complicate Manchester United’s pursuit. The Times reports that Conte expects to earn more than £10 million annually, a figure that could present a significant challenge for the club’s leadership.

There are also concerns within United’s hierarchy about Conte’s demanding personality, which reportedly contributed to difficulties during his previous spells at Chelsea and Tottenham. His management style could therefore raise questions about his suitability for the club’s long-term strategy.

Despite these concerns, Conte’s record remains impressive. He won Serie A with Juventus in his first season and achieved the same feat during his opening campaign with Napoli.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are reportedly considering other candidates, including former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann. Aston Villa boss Unai Emery and Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler are also admired, although securing either appointment could require substantial compensation.
