Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo has received mixed reactions from Celtic fans following his debut for the Scottish side in their impressive 7-1 win over Hearts on Sunday.
According to Football London on Monday, October 19, 2026, the young defender failed to convince some supporters during his first appearance for Celtic. However, his limited recent playing time has been identified as a possible reason for his difficulties.
Emenalo joined Celtic on loan from Chelsea after catching the attention of manager Xabi Alonso with his performances during the Blues’ pre-season preparations. The American-born left-back is the son of former Chelsea sporting director Michael Emenalo.
The teenager featured during Chelsea’s summer tour of Australia and Asia, where he reportedly impressed Alonso with his displays. However, the arrival of Pep Chavarria, alongside the availability of other defensive options, contributed to the decision to send him out on loan.
After recovering from an injury sustained at Chelsea, Emenalo finally made his Celtic debut against Hearts, coming on for Kieran Tierney in the second half.
Despite Celtic’s commanding victory, several supporters expressed concerns about the youngster’s fitness and ability to cope with the intensity of senior football.
One fan described him as being “well off the pace,” while another commented on X, saying: “Slow as treacle. Hopefully he gets up to speed with more games.”
Another supporter also raised questions about his physical condition, suggesting that he “looked blown” during his time on the pitch.
Nevertheless, some Celtic fans offered a more understanding assessment of the defender’s performance. One supporter noted that Emenalo continued to make himself available for passes despite struggling to match the tempo of the game. The fan also highlighted his extended absence from competitive football before making his debut.
The criticism should be considered in context, as the match marked Emenalo’s first competitive senior appearance. He is still adapting to a new club and the physical demands of first-team football after spending time recovering from injury.
Celtic’s demanding schedule could give the young defender further opportunities to prove himself as the season progresses. With the club competing in domestic and European competitions, he could gain valuable experience and improve his match fitness.
However, with Kieran Tierney also competing for the left-back position, Emenalo will need to demonstrate improved fitness, consistency and confidence if he hopes to secure more regular playing time.
