According to a report by Football London on October 21, 2026, Chelsea winger Estêvão Willian has been advised to consider a temporary departure from Stamford Bridge as he struggles to secure regular playing time under head coach Xabi Alonso.
The 19-year-old Brazilian joined Chelsea from Palmeiras in 2025 and enjoyed an encouraging first season, recording eight goals and four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions. However, his situation has changed since Alonso took charge during the summer, with the youngster yet to start a Premier League match this season.
Estêvão has managed just 154 minutes of action across the Premier League and Carabao Cup, raising concerns about his development and opportunities within the first team. Despite his considerable potential and estimated market value of approximately €111 million, the forward has found it difficult to establish himself in Alonso’s plans.
Chelsea’s tactical approach could be contributing to his limited involvement. Alonso has favoured a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer occupying the attacking midfield positions. Pedro Neto has also been deployed regularly in an advanced right-wing-back role, further limiting the available opportunities for Estêvão.
Former Chelsea winger Scott Sinclair believes the teenager may benefit from seeking regular football elsewhere. Drawing on his own experience of leaving Chelsea temporarily to gain playing time, Sinclair explained that young footballers need consistent opportunities to develop their abilities.
"As a young player, all you want to do is play football," Sinclair said.
He warned that spending extended periods on the bench could affect a young player's confidence and make it harder to perform effectively when opportunities eventually arise.
Sinclair acknowledged that the decision ultimately belongs to Estêvão but emphasised the importance of gaining regular first-team experience at this stage of his career.
"Only Estevao can decide what is best for him, but because he is so young, getting consistent game time is essential and having been in the same position, I’d say he should go and play."
Former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin has also raised the possibility of the Brazilian seeking opportunities elsewhere if his circumstances remain unchanged. Speaking to Goal, Nevin highlighted the importance of regular football in helping young players develop the experience and confidence needed to become established professionals.
Although Nevin did not demand an immediate departure, he cautioned against allowing Estêvão’s considerable talent to remain underused on the substitutes' bench.
Chelsea now face an important decision regarding the winger’s future. While retaining him could benefit the club in the long term, securing regular minutes may be essential to his progress.
With the January transfer window approaching, a loan move could emerge as a practical solution if Estêvão continues to struggle for opportunities under Alonso.
