According to a post on the official Super Falcons X account on Saturday, 7 November 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos were just 45 minutes away from taking a historic lead in the U-17 Women’s World Cup final. At halftime in Rabat, they were ahead 1–0 against Japan after a strong first-half performance. Three players made a particularly important impact.
Oluebube Umejiaku
Oluebube Umejiaku was a constant threat, repeatedly finding space near Japan’s penalty area and putting pressure on the defence. She had several promising chances and came close to scoring before Nigeria took the lead. Her movement unsettled Japan’s defenders and opened up space for her teammates. Her attacking pressure helped keep the Japanese defence on edge.
Queen Joseph
Queen Joseph was influential both defensively and going forward. She disrupted Japan’s attempts to attack through the middle and along the wings, intercepting passes, making key tackles and clearing the ball when necessary. She also pushed forward to support Nigeria’s attacks. Her energy and determination helped set the tone for the team.
Awawu Bashiru
Awawu Bashiru scored the only goal of the first half, finishing a well-constructed team move late in the period. Nigeria moved the ball quickly to create an opening, and Bashiru was in the right position to convert. The goal was her third of the tournament and gave Nigeria a valuable lead to defend.
