Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has congratulated the national U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, following their historic title triumph at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, describing their journey as a testament to resilience, dedication, and team spirit.
The Flamingos etched their names into the history books on Saturday after defeating Japan 2–1 in the final, becoming the very first African nation to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
In an official congratulatory message, Senator Tinubu lauded the team for recovering from an initial setback to string together six consecutive victories en route to world glory, asserting that their performance brought immense pride to the nation and elevated African women’s football on the global stage.
“Your path to victory was not an easy one. You shrugged off your shaky start and took on the world, winning six matches in a row on your way to the golden trophy, confirming what others already know—that Nigerians are world beaters,” the First Lady stated.
Highlighting the broader significance of the achievement, Senator Tinubu expressed profound pride in how the players’ unwavering commitment placed Nigeria back in the global spotlight.
“I am particularly proud of this inspiring feat which has now placed the country, and indeed Africa, at the pinnacle of women football across the world,” she added. “Through your team spirit, dedication, and hard work, Nigeria again is the toast of the world.”
The First Lady concluded her message by extending her appreciation to the coaching staff and technical crew for orchestrating the team’s historic campaign, saying, “I celebrate you, dear Flamingos, the Head Coach, and the entire technical team. I say well done.”
