According to a report by Football365 on Saturday, October 24, 2026, former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has questioned Viktor Gyökeres’ future at the Emirates Stadium, suggesting that the Swedish striker may no longer have a secure place in Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Gyökeres arrived at Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2025 for a reported fee of around £64 million after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.
The 27-year-old enjoyed an outstanding spell in Portugal, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting before moving to the Premier League. However, his performances in England have generated debate over his ability to maintain the same level of productivity.
Despite scoring 21 goals across all competitions during his first season with Arsenal, Gyökeres has reportedly struggled to establish himself as an undisputed first-choice striker. Competition from Kai Havertz has also increased the pressure on the Sweden international.
Petit believes the situation surrounding the striker has become concerning, suggesting that his position within the squad has weakened. The former Arsenal midfielder also expressed doubts about Gyökeres’ confidence, raising questions about whether he still has a long-term future in North London.
Arsenal’s reported interest in other attacking options could make the situation even more complicated for the former Sporting forward, particularly if he fails to convince Arteta that he deserves to remain the club’s leading striker.
However, former Liverpool striker Djibril Cissé has offered a different perspective, arguing that Gyökeres should be given sufficient time to adjust to the demands of English football.
Cissé’s assessment suggests that the striker’s difficulties may be part of the adaptation process rather than evidence of a decline in his ability. His impressive goalscoring record in Portugal also indicates that he possesses the quality to make a significant contribution at Arsenal.
Nevertheless, Gyökeres will need to improve his consistency and take advantage of his opportunities as Arsenal continue their pursuit of major honours.
Despite Petit’s concerns, Arsenal have not officially indicated that they intend to part ways with the Swedish international. His performances in the coming months could prove decisive in determining his role in Arteta’s long-term plans.
