Steve McManaman Says He ‘Feels Sorry’ for Two Arsenal Stars

According to a report by Metro on Thursday November 5, 2026, Steve McManaman believes Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz are unfairly criticised for Arsenal’s cautious playing style.

The former Liverpool midfielder says he feels sorry for both forwards because Mikel Arteta’s tactics sometimes make it difficult for them to deliver their best performances.

Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory over Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Wednesday. First-half goals from Noni Madueke and Gyokeres secured all three points before Wiktor Nowak scored a late consolation.

The result maintained Arsenal’s unbeaten record in this season’s competition. The Gunners currently occupy third position after four matches, having previously defeated Napoli and Lille while drawing 2-2 against Bayern Munich.

Arteta made six changes to his starting lineup following Sunday's victory over Liverpool. Gyokeres was handed an opportunity to lead the attack instead of Havertz. The Swedish striker made the most of his opportunity by providing an assist for Madueke before scoring Arsenal’s second goal.

Although his influence decreased after the interval, McManaman believes the striker deserved praise for his contribution. Speaking on TNT Sports, he explained that Gyokeres looked dangerous when Arsenal maintained their attacking structure and supported him with nearby teammates.

However, the former England international believes the forwards sometimes struggle because Arsenal prioritise defensive organisation rather than entertaining attacking football. He argued that Gyokeres and Havertz regularly receive criticism for problems that are not entirely their fault.

McManaman also expects Havertz to regain his starting position against Hull City on Saturday. He believes Arteta trusts the German more when facing important opponents, particularly after his impressive contribution against Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Arteta praised Gyokeres for his goal, assist and overall performance against Slavia Prague. The Arsenal manager highlighted his connection with teammates and described the display as an important confidence boost for the striker.
