According to a report by The Sun on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to have a different manager oversee his final appearance for Portugal following his decision to retire from international football amid a reported disagreement with current coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old Portuguese captain reportedly decided to end his international career after tensions emerged between him and Jesus, who left him out of Portugal’s September fixture against Norway.
The former Manchester United forward was said to have been unhappy with the decision, prompting him to leave the national team camp before eventually announcing his retirement from international football.
However, reports indicate that Ronaldo could be given one final opportunity to represent Portugal before bringing his remarkable international career, which has spanned more than two decades, to an end.
According to ESPN, Jesus is unlikely to take charge of Portugal during the proposed farewell appearance because of his reported differences with Ronaldo. Instead, another experienced manager could be appointed to oversee the occasion.
Former Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has emerged as a possible candidate to lead the team for the farewell match. Scolari handed Ronaldo his international debut in 2003 and developed a close relationship with the forward during their time together.
The relationship between the two reportedly extended beyond football, with Ronaldo maintaining a strong personal bond with Scolari. The former manager also received the forward’s support following the death of his father when he was 20 years old.
Meanwhile, another former Portugal manager, Fernando Santos, is reportedly not being considered for the occasion. Although Santos worked with Ronaldo between 2014 and 2022, their relationship reportedly suffered a setback after the forward was dropped from the starting lineup during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo made his international debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003 and went on to record 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, establishing himself as the country’s all-time leading scorer.
His international achievements include winning the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles, further cementing his status as one of the greatest footballers in history.
In his retirement announcement, Ronaldo reflected emotionally on his journey with the national team and the responsibility of representing his country throughout his illustrious career.
“The day has come back for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo declared.
He further explained: “It was not an easy decision. Because some decisions are not made with the mind alone. They are also made with the heart.”
Despite the reported disagreement, Jesus has publicly acknowledged Ronaldo’s immense contribution to Portuguese football, describing him as an inspiration to the national team and younger generations.
“Cristiano is a global icon, an example for Portugal and the national team,” Jesus said, recognising the forward’s outstanding achievements.
The Portuguese manager also expressed acceptance of Ronaldo’s decision to retire, maintaining that the legendary striker would always hold a special place in the hearts of Portuguese supporters.
